Samtan art mine is a cultural tourist attraction in Jeongseon, Gangwon province. It used to be a coal mining facility in the past but now serves as an art space which holds many art pieces by both, Korean and foreign artists and is becoming the space for the understanding of cultural diversity.

Samtan Art mine is made of 4 floors starting with the Art Residency Hotel, where you can stay the night and a cafe with an observation lounge, ending up with an amazing Rail by Museum, which gives you an opportunity to see how the mine looks in the past when miners still dug for coal.

2nd and 3rd floors serve as a modern art gallery, where you can learn about the life of coal miners and also enjoy various traditional and modern art pieces and find something to think about as well.

Samtan Art Mine is also a filming location for a popular Korean drama “Descendants of the Sun”(2016) and has been recognized more after its release. I also watched Descendants of the Sun back in 2016 and totally loved it! Can you recognize which place was used for one of the most important scenes in the drama? Hint: it is an old shower facility where 3000 miners would take shower after a long working day.

Totally recommend this place for those who either like places that breathe history within its walls and also to those who just want original photos on their Instagram feed. This was actually my initial reason to go, but as I explored more, I realized that there is more to it than just a cool appearance. Check out this video to see what I am talking about^^ We also have some drone footage both, in the beginning, and in the ending of this video, so make sure not to miss it out!
