“안그래도 힘든 인생인데, 한국 문화에는 그 힘든 인생을 더 힘들게 만드는 요소들이 많은 것 같습니다. (Life is already hard, but I think many aspects of Korean culture aggravate the difficulty of life.)”

So many Koreans have asked me through messages and comments, “How come you speak English so well?” “I want to speak good English too, but I’m not good at speaking. What should I do to speak well in English?” But you see, this statement itself is contradictory. So what do I mean by that? In many other languages, when asking if the other person knows a certain language, they say, “Can you speak English?” “hablas español?” “你会说中文吗?” Speak, hablas, and 说 are all verbs with the meaning “speak,” and this connotes that to know a certain language means to know how to speak that language. So technically, when Korean people say “My English is good, but my speaking is bad,” it doesn’t make sense, because if you cannot speak a certain language well, then that means you are not good at that language.
